Actors in Long Life Learning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Actors in Long Life Learning - Essay Example The global economy is highly influenced by transitions and adjustments challenges at the social, business and cultural levels. Knowledge is not just the power, but a property to highly be marketed and commercialized. Lifelong learning is considered to be a vehicle that can enable immigrant community to adapt the challenges of new global economy. Human brain is perceived to represent a new ââ¬Ëgrey capitalââ¬â¢ as it is set alongside the familiar economic resources such as land, labor and finance (Field, 2006, p. 9). This piece of research work presents the concept of lifelong learning and analyzes how this can help immigrants improve their personal and professional development and as a result improve the economic prosperity of country they migrated to. This paper investigates the role of lifelong learning in contributing to the economic and social prosperity and reflects on the personal experiences of lifelong learning in terms of personal and professional development. Lifelong Learning and implication on immigrant community In todayââ¬â¢s competitive knowledge economy, lifelong learning has become a critically important strategy to make people highly competitive and productive. (World Bank, 2003). Lifelong learning is a human process and a metaphor to describe societies, regions and organizations. Lifelong learning is described as an ideal goal for better education (Parson, 1990), as a human process (Parson, 1990), as a product (Hatton, 1997) and moral duty of people (Wain, 1991). Learning is a human process and it requires consciousness and the capacity to utilize their knowledge. Lifelong learning is a continuous learning throughout oneââ¬â¢s life directed by the individual needs and intentionality mediated by the capacities and interests (Billett, 2010, P. 402). World Bank (2003) explained that lifelong learning refers to learning throughout the lifetime including formal, non-formal and informal education and training. Formal education and training are structured programs recognized by formal education system. Non-formal education is structured education system but not recognized by national systems. Informal education and training are fully unstructured education or training systems that can take place anywhere such as home, organizations, workplace etc. Lifelong learning aims at positively influencing the inexperienced people in changing their career targets and making them highly demanded individuals by taking the self-responsibility of their learning and education. It thus assists them in developing their own learning skills (Uzunboylu and Ursen, 2011, p. 450). Technology in modern society plays significant role in lifelong learning. Distance or online-education facilitated by colleges and universities can be considered as examples for how modern technology assist lifelong learning.

Gay Marriage Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Gay Marriage - Research Paper Example The reasons for my belief will be discuss thoroughly in the following pages. But before that discussion, I shall present the history of gay marriage in America and the controversial landmark ruling of the Supreme Court regarding the legalization of gay marriage in San Francisco back in 2004. I shall have discussions regarding how countries such as the Netherlands have already recognized that these unions are valid and carry specific economic benefits for all concerned. I will touch upon the fact that 19 states beginning with New York, San Francisco, and Massachusetts, including California have already passed state laws legally recognizing these unions. It is my belief that our national laws and policies must be revised to follow suit or else it will fall behind the times and become irrelevant in our future societies. I will prove that in the long run, gay marriage is exactly what we need in order to cure certain problems within the psyche of our nation. In America, the first document ed case of gay marriage license application dates back to 1967 when Michael McConnel and Richard John Baker applied for an Oklahoma marriage license. This was the time of the Stonewall Riots and a huge wave of change was taking over the gay and lesbian communities. (Eskridge & Spedale 5). The Stonewall riots were taken by the gay and lesbian community as a chance to have: ... marched out of their closets and challenged their outlaw status. Lesbian and gay activists insisted that the state should no longer treat them as presumptive criminals and should instead, treat them the same as it treated straight citizens. This was the first time that the once hidden in the shadows issue of gay marriage came to the forefront of a public debate that would run for over 30 years. The state was now in a precarious position. Do they allow the re-definition of marriage as also covering same sex couples or not? Marriage had always been defined as a union between a man and a woman for decades. Now tha t definition was being challenged and the state felt a need to protect the sanctity of marriage as defined by their understanding of the law. And that is exactly what the state legislators did. But true love will never be denied. To this day, in the states where gay marriage is not yet recognized, they continue to have life bonding commitment ceremonies and construct families by conceiving children through artificial means. They are in fact, leading the normal life of any traditional couple. However prude that the United States proved to be, other countries during the same time frame were already recognizing the rights of gay couples and treating them with the normalcy that they so deserved as citizens of their country. Denmark and Sweden were the first countries to allow and recognize same sex unions. In fact Denmark is noted as, in 1989, having been the first country to: ...enact a law enacting (almost) all the rights of marriage to same sex couples. These unions, were called regi stered partnerships. ((Eskridge & Spedale 5) Due to the approval of this law in Denmark, there was an influx of gay couples into the country coming from other countries like the United States, who took advantage of the law by registering and residing in Denmark as same sex couples. As an institution, marriage by definition has been challenged and revised by same sex couples across the globe over the past decades. Although not

Construction Dispute Boards Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Construction Dispute Boards - Essay Example that, an examination of traditional alternatives to the construction dispute boards will be highlighted before giving a comparative analysis of the two. Each construction project is distinct and unique from the other in its own right. This is because employers or project owners seek for customized services. Because of potential disputes that are bound to arise, each party nominates one impartial and independent person to form the dispute resolution board. Thereafter, the two nominated parties nominate a chairman with similar qualities to regulate the dispute board. The fundamental obligation of each member of the board is to get independent and original facts from the sites by regular visits and resolve the matter amicably. Through this, verdicts are easier to determine whenever conflicts or issues arise from the situation according to Donald (2009, p1). In unison, the board provides regular communication to their clients when there is a potential area of conflict that they detect. This effort is aim at resolving disputes before they arise and take negative directions. The composition of a dispute board may determine whether the boa rd takes the name of a Dispute Resolution Board (DRB) or Dispute Adjudication Board. The former name is strictly meant to give resolutions and a way forward and the latter provides adjudication positions. The following segments will look at the compositions of the DRBs. In most cases, the members of the DR boards do not exceed five. Unless the project is very large or too controversial such as the Hong Kong Airport project where seven members were used, three members are often the optimum figure. An odd number is chosen because of a need of a majority vote when a controversial standoff may have arisen. For a person to be named as a member, there are four qualities that they must posses and demonstrate. They must have an in depth knowledge with relevant design and construction issues. This means that they must understand areas where

Contemporary - Essay Example This is because a formal disclosure framework helps to guide regulators, and preparers towards better and more material disclosure. However, while material disclosure is supposed to be free and within a given time frame, there are numerous cases where preparers have failed to disclose significant materials to users or vice-versa. This fact has been associated with the idea that many organizations lack proper disclosure framework (White, 2009, p.67). It was this lack of proper disclosure framework that led IASB to carryout survey recently about disclosure framework, and found that regulators, preparers and users are supposed to work together so as to improve disclosure. All disclosures need improvement. Disclosure is supposed to be guided by materiality, and that principle based disclosure guidance would be essential. This study will be therefore examining why regulators, preparers and users are supposed to work together so as to improve disclosure. All disclosures need improvement. D isclosure is supposed to be guided by materiality, and that principle based disclosure guidance would be essential According to United States Congress Staff (2002, p.788), one of the most significant findings of IASB is that disclosure should be guided by materiality. ... The main issue is a clear and comprehensive disclosure of information related to sound decision making by market participants, authorities, and the public. Majority of people held the view that crucial information regarding funds and expenditure has always been concealed from the users or in case where it is given, it is not clear and comprehensive. This fact has raised many concerns among the people who want that information disclosure should be improved because it has been facilitating corruption. Due to this increased demands, many organizations are implementing disclosure policies as they have started to come up with succinct disclosure framework. For instance, Financial Market Insurers (FMIs) have implemented a disclosure framework that was organized to supplement the CPSS-ISCO principles for financial market infrastructures, and help it in providing the comprehensive degree of disclosure that is expected of them under Principle 23 on disclosure of rules, main processes, and mar ket data (Fung et al., 2007, p.140). According to Bunger (2012, p.337), the disclosure framework was prepared in association with the CPSS-IOSCO Assessment methodology for the principles for FMIs and the accountabilities of the authorities to ensure a common framework that will reduce burden on FMIs and give assessors a basic set of information from which to start their assessment of FMIs. Heated debate about accounting regulation that calls for a formal disclosure framework has led to establishment and implementation of new rules and regulation that governs information disclosure. For instance, federally tax-exempt organizations stated under IRC sections 501(c) and 501(d) ought to comply

Balanced Scoreboards - Research Paper Example Given that patients show that they are satisfied with the level of communication between them and the nurses, the hospital has been concerned about communication. As part of accomplishing its goals, the management has decided to consider communication as one of the priority areas to help it in doing so (Lawrie; Kalff & Andersen, 2005). The hospital is focused on the patients because they are the ones who are considered as clients. Without them, nothing can be achieved. Therefore, by establishing a culture of effective communication, their needs will be addressed without many constraints. However, for the higher scores, the hospital needs to make improvements in its areas of weakness. Although it has set good strategies, a lot still need to be done in order to perfect communication between the nurses and the patients. For this reason, it is suggested that it should train nurses to be critical listeners who consult their patients. Many clients complained of being ignored while making important decisions about their health. However, this is quite discouraging because they feel neglected (Zaffron & Steve, 2009). So, for the communication process to be enhanced, the nurses should adopt the culture of consultation before giving out any prescription or treatment. Otherwise, they will be violating the principle of informed consent. The area that seems to be doing well, based on the balanced scorecard, is interpersonal communication. The nurses have embraced the culture of critical listening and persuasiveness. This has established a good rapport between them and the patients. The other area is about intercultural communication. Although the facility serves people from diverse cultural backgrounds, they have been made comfortable by being culturally diversified. Meaning, everyone is given a special treatment that does not go against their cultural

Cranialfacial reconstruction - pre op surgical technologist tech Research Paper
Cranialfacial reconstruction - pre op surgical technologist tech - Research Paper Example In such cases, the reconstruction is carried out immediately once the problem is analyzed. The need for craniofacial reconstruction depends on the complexity of the patient. The other situations may arise when the patient has met with an accident where the facial bones or skull is broken. In certain cases it may be done to reconstruct the facial and skull bones for cancer patients if they have undergone any bone removal during cancer treatment. Another possibility of facial reconstruction is when the patient suffers from cleft lip disorder. (Hardt, 2007).In this case, the patientââ¬â¢s bones of the upper lip do not fuse properly with that of the lower lip. In any case, this option is preferred only if the patientââ¬â¢s skull or face cannot be modified using any other surgery. It is done to modify a childââ¬â¢s skull if the child is detected with abnormalities during the birth. The abnormalities may be due to genetic problems or disorders. This surgery is done keeping in mind the future problems and issues. Depending on the growth of bone, the original bone must be restructured. Since craniofacial surgery involves more risk, doctors opt for it only when there is no other way to treat the patient. Craniofacial reconstruction involves various pre-operative procedures. The reconstruction surgery is done based on these reports. The initial step in the pre-operative process is skull examination. This is done based on the x-ray and scan report of the patientââ¬â¢s skull. The patientââ¬â¢s skull is examined to analyze its shape and dimensions. (Barone, 2004).This helps in easy reconstruction of the damaged skull. Once the skull is examined, the reconstruction plan is implemented. In the reconstruction plan, the dental and facial structures are analyzed. The next step is to match the tissues of the patient. The tissues are tested and then selected in equivalence with the patientââ¬â¢s skull and facial tissues. This will ensure that the
Statement of Purpose Essay Example for Free
Statement of Purpose Essay I am determined to become a top engineer and researcher in radiology, advancing the development and application of this important technology. This is an era when information technologies, such as electronics and computer science, are mushrooming throughout the world. But how about radiological science? Is it a diminishing subject without a future? Of course not! It is a research area that has a unique and indispensable position in many fields such as industry and medical science. In my point of view, radiological science can be classified as a branch of information technology. Why? Combined with computer science and electronics, radiology provides us with information that was originally thought to be invisible such as the interior structure of metal, the image of the inside of the human body and even the existence of a celestial body far away from us. With the capacity of acquiring many kinds of important information, radiology is undoubtedly a promising research field. My initial interest in radiological science was sparked by a visit to the laboratory of the Large Container Inspection System (LCIS) when I was a freshman of Tsinghua University. LCIS, specially designed for Customs, was one of the key national projects taken charge by the Department of Engineering Physics. As a fruit of radiological science, it can present the image of the interior of a large container without even opening it. The seemingly magical power was really attractive to me, a young man with a keen curiosity and the ambition to fulfill accomplishments in engineering and applied technology. In the spring of 1999, I entered the (name) Laboratory and began to assist the professor in research. The assistants job offered me a great opportunity to work with and learn from the professors and graduates in the lab, who had not only taught me a lot of knowledge in radiology, but also impressed me with their enthusiasm and devotion to this field. To be competent in the job, often went to the library to read books and science journals on radiology, such as the Nuclear Instruments and Methods and IEEE Nuclear Science ; Medical Imaging. This reading, though a little bit difficult, brought to me valuable information of the state-of-the-art technology. With my broadening mind and growing interest, I am determined to become a top engineer and researcher in radiology, advancing the development and application of this important technology. While reading the journals, I discovered that the US is the best place to pursue my further study and research because of its favorable atmosphere of research in radiology. And the University of (name), one leader in nuclear engineering, has the graduate program that I most want to be associated with. From web sites and publications introducing the (university name), I learned that you are conducting a wide range of research in radiology, much of which I am interested in, such as radiation instrument design and radiation imaging. With the world-class faculty, advanced facility, nurturing and challenging environment, your graduate school is the best place where I can extend myself with the most advanced technologies. I know that the admission to your school is very competitive and challenging. But I am confident that I am qualified and well prepared for it. The undergraduate study in Tsinghua has built for me a solid academic foundation in mathematics and physics as well as in my major. Intelligent and diligent, I received outstanding records in the courses Ive taken and my overall GPA is in the top 5% of our department, for which I have been granted scholarships for 4 consecutive years. My research ability is also outstanding. In my college years, I took advantage of every opportunity to enhance my research ability and enrich my research experience in my major. I carefully and creatively planned and conducted the experiments in all the lab courses, such as Lab of Physics and Lab of Modern Physics. In the course of Modern Physical Electronics, I, with one of my classmates, designed an experiment to test the transmission feature of electrical cable used in the oil well nuclear logging system, and proposed some advice to make improvements. I also took part in the SRT (student research training) program, doing lab work on the application of virtual instrument in radiation detection and nuclear instrumentation. In the lab, I am appreciated by my advisor, Professor (name) for I am not only able to conduct research independently, but also understand how to cooperate with others. As a college student, I am well developed in many aspects. As the monitor of the class, I showed responsibility and leadership in my work. For my excellence in English ability (please refer to the Resume), I was selected as the editor of the University English TV Station and the broadcaster of the University English Radio Station. I love sports and take part in many fields of it: I am the captain of the basketball team of the class, the fourth place winner in the University Badminton Tournament and a good I-go player. In the annual Comprehensive Quality Assessment taken by the university to scale the students all around ability, I am always the top student of my class. I can not forget the days when I was in primary school, short and weak, always failing in the sports matches. With my enthusiasm in sports and the determination to become strong, I started to exercise. Each time when I was exhausted from running, out of breath and my legs aching, it was my perseverance that had kept me on the track. With my efforts paying off, my conviction became firmer: determination and perseverance is crucial in peoples success. With my perseverance and strong interest, as well as the academic background and the research ability, I am confident that I am a suitable candidate for your graduate program. My intended field of study is radiation measurement and imaging, medical physics and other related areas in radiology science. If I could be admitted and financially aided, I would like to pursue my PhD degree there. And after that, I will come back to China, to enter industry or research institutes to promote the research and application of radiological science
